What is an enzyme?

Have you ever wondered how your body breaks down the food you eat into nutrients that can be absorbed and used for energy? The answer lies in the digestive superheroes known as enzymes! An enzyme is a protein that assist in chemical reactions which makes it possible for life to exist. So, let's dive into the world of enzymes and discover how they work their magic.

Why are enzymes important?

Most commonly enzymes help digestion by breaking down foods we eat. The more natural enzymes we consume through raw foods the less our bodies have to make for digestion. In turn, this leads to the body being less stressed and reducing its workload.

Meet Your Digestive Superheroes: Enzymes!

Enzymes are specialized proteins that act as catalysts, helping to speed up chemical reactions in the body. They are found throughout the digestive system, from your mouth all the way to your small intestine, and are responsible for breaking down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into their respective building blocks.

There are several types of enzymes involved in digestion, each with its own specific job. For example, amylase helps to break down carbohydrates, lipase breaks down fats, and protease breaks down proteins. Without these enzymes, your body would struggle to extract the vital nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

Below is a list of some digestive Enzymes:

  • Protease
  • Amylase
  • Lipase
  • Cellulase
  • Bromelain

Digestion and Enzymes

We must get enzymes through the food we eat or from supplements we take. It is always important to recognize what enzymes we are consuming. If you are feeling down you may not be getting the proper nutrients out of your food because your digestive system is not working properly. One cure could be the enzymes you are consuming. With the proper enzymes, our overall health and digestion will improve . In addition you will feel better too.

How Enzymes Keep Your Body Running Smoothly

Enzymes play a crucial role in ensuring that your digestive system runs smoothly. When you eat a meal, your body releases a range of enzymes to break down the different types of food you consume. These enzymes work together to ensure that the food is broken down into small enough particles to be absorbed by your body.

In addition to aiding digestion, enzymes also have other important functions in the body. For example, they help to regulate metabolic processes, support immune function, and aid in the repair and regeneration of tissues. Without enzymes, many of these processes would be slow or impossible.

Enzymes are the unsung heroes of your digestive system. They work tirelessly to break down the food you eat, ensuring that your body can extract the vital nutrients it needs to function properly. So, next time you sit down to a meal, take a moment to appreciate the hard work of these tiny but mighty superheroes.

The founder of EDL personally knows how far help can go. In the middle of law school, 2010, he suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury. He had to relearn how to do the most basic activities like walking or talking. With self determination and help from therapy and the department of assistive and rehabilitative services (DARS), he graduated law school and created this nonprofit. Without help, he firmly believes things would have turned out much different. That is why EDL wants to help. We know firsthand how much of a difference it makes.
